Am I a Candidate for Weight Loss Surgery?

You may wonder if you or your loved one is a candidate for weight loss surgery. This is an excellent question. Bariatric surgery is a major undertaking and one you should discuss thoroughly with your doctor. Below are a couple factors to keep in mind.

The clinical requirement to qualify for surgery is based on your BMI. You qualify for bariatric surgery if you:

  • Have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of over 40, or
  • Have a BMI of over 35 and are experiencing severe negative health effects, such as high blood pressure or diabetes, related to being severely overweight

In general, if you are at least 100 pounds overweight, you will likely qualify for weight loss surgery.

Making the decision to have weight loss surgery requires serious consideration. We’ve created a program checklist to help you understand the different factors and also to provide an overview of what it will take to participate in a program. You should consider the risks and complications as well as insurance and the financial matters for this type of surgery.

If you feel bariatric surgery is the right decision for you, talk to your doctor and make sure that you understand the mental and physical preparation required to begin the program. To be successful you will want and need the support of your friends and family.

Yes or No – Making the Decision

This is a big decision, one that you may need to evaluate and think about for a while. What determines if you have reached your “moment of truth” and are ready to pursue bariatric surgery? That’s a question you will need to answer with your doctor.
