Danbury Hospital maintains a Level IIIB NICU to care for premature babies and those who are ill at birth. While most births have happy, healthy homecomings, in some cases an infant will need to stay in the hospital for a while.
About ten to 15 percent of newborns come into the world with complications. They are born premature and need to gain weight, or can have lungs that aren't fully developed. Sometimes they have respiratory complications and other problems.
While you should always expect the best for your baby, you should be prepared and informed about the NICU if your newborn has a problem. If your baby goes to the NICU, you will receive an informational guide from your baby's nurse.
Common Newborn Complications
- Premature or low-weight births
- Underdeveloped lungs
- Respiratory complications
