Cancer Care for Women

The Praxair Cancer Center offers a robust cancer care program with a team of medical experts specializing in breast and gynecological cancers. Women can access a full gamut of services from health screenings and sophisticated diagnostic testing to advanced treatments and survivorship.

Women’s Imaging Program

A cohesive women’s imaging program includes specialists skilled in the many diagnostic tools used to find breast, gynecological and other tumors at their earliest stages.

Genetic Counseling

The Hereditary Cancer Program staffed by a board-certified genetic counselor serves women who are at increased risk for cancer based on their personal or family history.

Breast Cancer

The Breast Care Center – led by a fellowship-trained breast surgeon – puts the needs of patients first with a multidisciplinary team of surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, a cancer care coordinator and others. Women receive high-quality, seamless care from diagnosis through treatment and into survivorship.

Gynecological Cancer

The Gynecological Cancer Program – led by Dr. Shohreh Shahabi, fellowship-trained surgeon who specializes in gynecologic oncology and cancer research – focuses on the prevention, detection and treatment of cancers in the female reproductive tract. The multidisciplinary team includes surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, a cancer care coordinator and others.

Women with gynecological cancers who need surgery have access skilled surgeons in minimally invasive procedures, including robotic-assisted surgery. The Praxair Cancer Center also offers high-dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy in radiation oncology for gynecologic cancers to precisely deliver radiation to the tumor while sparing normal tissue.

Pathology

The hospital’s pathologists are experts in diagnosing and staging breast, gynecological and other cancers – an important factor in determining a treatment plan for the type and extent of cancer present. All pathology tests are conducted in-house with quick turn-around times to ensure women get the results needed to begin treatment as soon as possible, if necessary.

Multidisciplinary Approach

The cancer care team holds a weekly breast and a biweekly gynecologic multidisciplinary case conference to help identify the most appropriate treatment plan for each individual.

Clinical Trials and Research

Women with all types of cancers have access to the latest research findings and clinical trials through the Praxair Cancer Center. Women with gynecological cancers can take part in clinical trials through the Gynecological Oncology Group (GOG), the only national cooperative study group devoted exclusively to gynecological malignancies.

The Reproductive Tumor Biology Research Laboratory at the Danbury Hospital Biomedical Research Institute is dedicated to bringing research findings to the bedside as quickly as possible.
