Psychiatry Residency Program
The inpatient service consists of one unit that accepts involuntary as well as voluntary patients. The unit is a 22-bed general adult unit. The unit consists of an acute short-term program with varied diagnostic categories that include:
- Bipolar disorders
- Major depression
- Anxiety disorders
- Personality disorders
- Substance abuse in conjunction with other psychiatric disorders
The unit has two full-time psychiatrists, three psychiatric social workers, activity therapy clinicians, and full-time nursing staff appropriate to the occupancy level.
Residents receive experience in the use of electroconvulsive therapy. They are taught the indications for ECT and participate in the decision-making and protocols to deliver this treatment modality. They are participants/observers during treatments and manage their patient’s post treatment.
Danbury Hospital is a preferred provider for several large managed care corporations, and residents have experience in managed care aspects of treatment. Residents become conversant with issues of precertification, concurrent review, and other utilization review protocols. They often work with the social workers and may be assigned tasks with managed care personnel to expedite the care of their patients.
