Surgery Residency

Message from the Chairman

Surgery Residency Program for medical education at Danbury Hospital

The General Surgery Residency at Danbury Hospital received initial AGME approval in 2010 and matched its first group of residents in the 2011 NRMP match. Although the residency program itself is new, Danbury Hospital was a secondary site to the Sound Shore Medical Center General Surgery Residency, and has had a full complement of surgical residents for the past twelve years. Danbury Hospital has academic affiliations with the University of Vermont, Yale University School of Medicine, Ross University, and the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. Members of our surgical teaching faculty are in the clinical professorship track at the University of Vermont.

With the freedom of our own program, and without the burden of institutional memory, the residency is constantly evolving. Fluidity to predict and meet the rapidly changing educational needs of residents is a top priority of the program. We constantly seek innovation to prepare residents for the dramatic changes in the U.S. healthcare system, including the overhaul which is occurring in graduate medical education.

A strong background in research is an important part of any graduate medical training, and all categorical residents are required to do a year of research between their second and third clinical years. Research, however, is not limited to the basic sciences, and residents are offered the freedom to spend their year in basic science, clinical, or translational research. Extended research faculty mentorship and facilities are available at the University of Vermont. For the past two years, a resident has remained at Danbury Hospital, integrally involved in our initiative for quality improvement using outcomes data generated by the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program or ACS-NSQIP.

Our faculty is young and motivated. Most of our general surgeons have fellowship training in either colorectal, minimally invasive or hepatobiliary surgery. Many of them lead research projects that include residents and culminate in presentations at national meetings and journal publications.

As the program director and chairman of the department I have the utmost commitment to provide our residents with the best of education while keeping the ever changing medical landscape in mind.
