About our Guest Speaker

Norma D. Gyle, R. N., Ph. D.
Former Deputy Commissioner
Connecticut Department of Public Health

Appointed Department of Public Health Deputy Commissioner in 1999, Dr. Gyle has directed a wide range of health policy initiatives and intervention, including those focused on children, local health practitioner regulation, infectious diseases and the collection and analysis of health data to help plan policy for the future.

Dr. Gyle is recognized as a nursing leader in public health policy both in Connecticut and across the nation. She has been appointed to numerous boards and commissions, and currently serves on the Connecticut Commission on Children.She was a member of Connecticut’s House of Representatives from 1984 - 1998, serving as Ranking Member of the Public Health Committee and Vice-Chair of the National Conference of State Legislators’ (NCSL) Health Committee. She also served as the honorary chair of the 2008 Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Her legislative initiatives include designated blood donations, needle exchange program, managed care reform and 48-hour maternity stays. She is the former chair of the Department of Public Health’s Executive Quality Assurance Committee and recipient of the Connecticut Nurses Association’s Agnes Olson Award for political activism on behalf of public health.

As a registered nurse, Dr. Gyle has many years of clinical experience in both hospitals and home health primary care settings. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a Master of Science in Counseling, both from Western Connecticut State University. She also holds a Ph.D. in Health Administration.
