New Milford Hospital and Library Improve Access to Health Information

Monday, December 06, 2010 - New Milford, CT

New Milford Hospital has joined forces with the New Milford Public Library to provide a valuable new health resource known as the Community Health Information Center (the CHI Center), where an array of health information is concentrated in dedicated space for area residents. Hospital officials, library staff and members of the community gathered at the library in mid-November to launch the CHI Center, which consists of books, pamphlets and a vast online system known as Consumer Health Complete by Ebsco designed to empower individuals to become better decision-makers about their health care.  The services are free to all library members. A public information session will be held on January 15 at the library; for more information, call 860-355-1191.

“CHI is also the traditional Chinese symbol for the life-process and the flow of energy that sustains living things.  In this initiative, this includes the flow of useful health information that can improve one’s life,” explained Marydale DeBor, Director of Planetree at New Milford Hospital.  “Being a Planetree hospital means that New Milford is dedicated to healing body, mind and spirit, with a profound commitment to prevention and community health. We want to empower patients through access to trusted sources of information.”

The “plane tree” or sycamore is where Hippocrates, the father of medicine, sat when he taught his medical students in ancient Greece. The Hospital became a Planetree hospital in 2008, implementing a host of progressive programs in the hospital and community – including a senior dining program, integrative (complementary) medicine services, expanded pastoral care, and advocacy through a patient and family advisory council.
