New Milford Hospital Schedules Strong Women Strong Bones Program

Friday, August 26, 2011 - New Milford, CT

New Milford Hospital is looking for a few good women! The organization will offer the StrongWomen™, Strong Bones Program, a nationally recognized fitness program that provides 7-weeks (2 sessions per week) of exercise for middle-aged and older women at three locations, First Congregational Church of New Milford, The Kent Specialty Care Center and the Brookfield Senior Center. The program is appropriate for most women; however, all participants must consult with their physician before beginning this exercise program. Physician referral forms will be provided when registering for the program.

Exercise focuses on strength training to provide many potential benefits, including arthritis relief, restoration of balance and reduction of falls, strengthening of bones, proper weight maintenance, and improved glucose control. Additionally, such exercise promotes improvements for a healthy state of mind, sleep quality and cardiovascular health.

The cost is $85 for each 7-week session or $7 per class at the following locations and dates:

First Congregational Church in New Milford Mondays and Fridays, 10a.m.-11:15 a.m. September 12 through October 28, 2011 and October 31 through December 16, 2011

The Kent Specialty Care Center Wednesdays and Saturdays, 10 – 11:15 am September 14 through October 29, and November 2 through December 17

Brookfield Senior Center Tuesdays and Fridays, 2:30 – 3:45 pm September 13 through October 28, and November 1 through December 16

These series will be led by Lisa Lee, a certified yoga instructor and licensed massage therapist, who completed the Tufts University Strong Women training in 2004, and served as a StrongWomen Program leader for several years.

The Strong Women Program was developed by Miriam Nelson, PhD, as associate professor at the Gerald J. and Dorothy R. Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University. The StrongWomen program is based upon years of research on how strength training and proper nutrition improve the health of women of all ages. “Strength is a critical factor in living healthier, more active lifestyles. Our research shows that a program of strength training not only improves bone density, but reduces falls, improves arthritis symptoms and increases flexibility and strength,” said Dr. Nelson.
