New Milford Hospital Schedules Strong Women™, Strong Bones Program
New Milford Hospital is looking for a few good women! The organization will offer the StrongWomen™, Strong Bones Program, a nationally recognized fitness program that provides 7-weeks (2 sessions per week) of exercise for middle-aged and older women at three locations, First Congregational Church of New Milford, The Kent Specialty Care Center and the Brookfield Senior Center. The program is appropriate for most women; however, all participants 70 years of age and older must consult with their physician before beginning this exercise program. Physician referral forms will be provided when registering for the program.
Exercise focuses on strength training to provide many potential benefits, including arthritis relief, restoration of balance and reduction of falls, strengthening of bones, proper weight maintenance, and improved glucose control. Additionally, such exercise promotes improvements for a healthy state of mind, sleep quality and cardiovascular health.
The cost is $85 for each 7-week session at the following locations and dates:
First Congregational Church in New Milford
Mondays and Fridays, 10a.m.-11:15 a.m. January 2 through February 17, and March 5 through April 20
The Kent Specialty Care Center
Wednesdays and Saturdays, 10 – 11:15 am January 4 through February 18, and March 7 through April 21
Brookfield Senior Center
Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2:30 – 3:45 pm January 3 through February 16, and March 6 through April 19
We look forward to providing classes at the Senior Center in Washington Depot beginning March 2012.
These series will be led by Lisa Marie Lee, a certified yoga instructor and massage therapist, who completed the Tufts University StrongWomen training in 2004, and served as a StrongWomen Program leader at Hartford Hospital for several years.
The Strong Women Program was developed by Miriam Nelson, PhD, an associate professor at the Gerald J. and Dorothy R. Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University. The Strong Women program is based upon years of research on how strength training and proper nutrition improve the health of women of all ages. “Strength is a critical factor in living healthier, more active lifestyles. Our research shows that a program of strength training not only improves bone density, but reduces falls, improves arthritis symptoms and increases flexibility and strength,” said Dr. Nelson.
