The American College of Surgeons (ACoS), Commission on Cancer, has granted Approval with Commendation for cancer services at Western Connecticut Health Network (WCHN), specifically recognizing the commitment to quality care at the Praxair Cancer Center of Danbury Hospital and the Diebold Family Cancer Center at New Milford Hospital. This designation is a three-year re-approval for both hospitals distinguishing their exceptional performance in ongoing improvement and public accountability for services provided. The ACoS Commission on Cancer conducted voluntary site surveys in October to assess the hospitals' compliance with 36 standards as compared to other approved programs. ACoS-approved programs represent a broad-based network of comprehensive cancer programs that offer the entire spectrum of cancer control activities, from prevention to rehabilitation and long-term follow-up.

WCHN President and CEO John M. Murphy, MD, praised the cancer teams at Danbury and New Milford hospitals for their dedication to providing modern cancer care in a highly nurturing and supportive environment. "We have an exceptional team of physicians, nurses and other staff who work tirelessly to ensure quality of care for our patients. With physicians and other staff collaborating across both settings, we believe the Praxair Cancer Center in Danbury and the Diebold Family Cancer Center in New Milford are gems in our community. We value this prestigious, independent assessment to help communicate our sincere and lasting commitment to delivering quality resources that address cancer throughout the region," Dr. Murphy said.

According to Robert Kloss, MD, Chief, Medical Oncology, Western Connecticut Health Network, and Chairman of Danbury Hospital's Cancer Committee, both Danbury and New Milford hospitals met all requirements, while exceeding standards in multiple areas of clinical care and management. "We earned the highest scores possible in standards for outcomes analysis, data management timeliness and quality, patient guidelines, prevention and early detection actitivies, professional education and quality improvement. Our nursing teams blend top-notch skills with a level of compassion and support that our patients and families hold in high regard," Dr. Kloss explained.

Joseph Bargellini, MD, Director of Radiation Oncology and Chairman of the Cancer Committee at New Milford Hospital, underscored the high level of advanced technology blended with advanced medical practice in the community setting of New Milford Hospital. "While offering patients a comfortable and nurturing setting for care, we were ranked at the highest level for multiple areas of care and operations," said Dr. Bargellini. "Our approach has been to consistently maintain or exceed standards, as a leading cancer provider in all aspects of quality, data and clinical management, research, outreach, professional education and staff support. Our partnership with Danbury Hospital has strengthened our capabilities to keep advanced programs and services readily available in the community hospital setting to ensure that the our patients receive leading edge treatment with the comforts of home and family nearby ."

Since its inception in 1922, the Commission's goal has been to reduce complications and deaths related to cancer through education, standard setting and the monitoring of quality care. Beginning in the 1930s, the Commission established standards and a program of review and approval for cancer programs. Currently, almost 1,500 facilities have gained approval for their cancer program. The standards continue to promote and support multidisciplinary care and improvements to quality overall.
