Network Expands Regional Cancer Services as New Therapies Begin to Take Shape
While we await an out-and-out cure, Western Connecticut Health Network is striving to expand and improve cancer care throughout the region, supporting major advances that are quietly transforming the disease to a chronic condition that can be managed over time.
Danbury Hospital and New Milford Hospital share a long tradition of attracting top talent to lead the charge for patients and families facing cancer, and to help survivors take back control and focus on healthy living. Their affiliation as a single health network in 2010 provides new opportunities to be a regional force aimed at increasing early detection, and supporting those in our community who are among the estimated 12 million American cancer survivors. The future looks brighter in our own backyard as the network combines a focus on wellness, screening, surveillance and research, constantly preparing as new therapies begin to take shape.
Western Connecticut Health Network has integrated a team of highly experienced cancer specialists and scientists to serve residents of Fairfield County, Litchfield County and communities in nearby New York. The Network provides caring support of patients at both hospitals, and their affiliated organizations, in cancer programs that are approved by the American College of Surgeons, Commission on Cancer. With accredited breast imaging centers, dedicated breast care programs, and clinical trials for many cancer diagnoses, the Network also operates the Biomedical Research Institute and its Reproductive Tumor Biology Laboratory, supporting research that will eventually reach patients in the form of leading edge treatment. Our comprehensive team of physicians, nurses, technologists and other professionals includes:
- Certified and highly experienced physician specialists in medical oncology, hematology, radiation oncology, radiology/nuclear medicine, and pathology/laboratory medicine to guide diagnosis and treatment
- Surgeons with fellowship training, advanced certification and dedicated practices for breast, colorectal, lung, gastrointestinal, urological and gynecological cancers
- Cancer Case Review Teams offering multi-disciplinary recommendations for individual treatment and support
- Nurses with advanced skills and certification in chemotherapy and other cancer disciplines, offering education, support and coordination of care among providers
The Best of Both Worlds
The Network has assembled teams offering highly specialized care for breast, colorectal, gynecological, lung, urologic/genitourinary, and liver/pancreas/biliary cancers, including fellowship trained surgeons and a dedicated inpatient oncology unit. This broad spectrum of expertise allows physicians to collaborate on different aspects of diagnosis and treatment – while keeping outreach and supportive care thriving in both communities. Earlier this year, our region’s longstanding medical oncologist/hematologists combined their expertise within Western Connecticut Medical Group – the group practice affiliated exclusively with Danbury and New Milford hospitals – to make closer connections among their colleagues who provide primary care in 10 area towns, and specialty care in nearly 30 medical and surgical disciplines.
Patricia Tietjen, MD, Chairman, Department of Medicine at Danbury Hospital, said, “We are reshaping our approach to cancer medicine to ensure that our entire region has access to a higher level of quality, convenience and service. With both hospitals well-equipped to serve cancer patients and their families, and physicians sharing expertise across facilities, we are positioned to deliver an exceptional experience and greater reassurance with advanced care close to home.”
