Danbury Hospital’s Praxair Cancer Center Offers Free Skin Cancer Screenings

Tuesday, April 22, 2014 - Danbury, CT

There's a mole you've been aware of for many years on the upper part of your left arm. Recently, however, you've noticed it appears to have changed in size, shape or color. It's generally at this point of awareness when we finally wonder and ask ourselves that all-important question "could this be a skin cancer?" The answer: Don't wait, have it checked out.

The Praxair Cancer Center at Danbury Hospital will conduct free skin cancer screenings on Tuesday, May 20, 2014 and Wednesday, May 21, 2014 from 6 to 8 p.m. The screenings will be performed by Danbury area dermatologists and Western Connecticut Health Network clinical and allied health staff.

No registration or pre-registration is required or will be taken. The skin cancer screenings take place on a first-come, first-served basis; closing at 7:45 p.m. both nights. Screening participants are asked to park in the Red Parking Garage on Locust Avenue and enter through the Stroock Building Main Entrance.

Skin cancer screening is encouraged if:

  • You have risk factors for skin cancer
  • You never had your skin checked for skin cancer
  • You want to learn more about preventing or recognizing skin cancer

Risk factors for skin cancer include:

  • Fair skin that freckles or burns easily
  • Blond or red hair, blue/green/gray eyes
  • A personal or family history of skin cancer
  • High sun exposure, multiple sunburns especially at an early age
  • Use of tanning beds or sun lamps
  • High number of moles

Skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States. It is treatable if found early, making early detection so very important. Take advantage of the opportunity to benefit from this preventive health screening conducted by board-certified dermatologists and help us encourage others to get screened for skin cancer, use sunscreen regularly and practice skin self-exams monthly. Please note - this is a screening only, no treatment will be provided.
