Danbury Hospital's Diabetes Self-Management Education Program (DSME) has expanded in our region to meet the ongoing demand for education related to diabetes. The program is now available in Danbury at 41 Germantown Road, Suite B03, and at 22 Old Waterbury Road, Suite 149 in Southbury.

Through a comprehensive program of assessment, education, medication management, nutritional support, and self-care skills provided by certified diabetes educators and registered dietitians, people with diabetes receive the necessary tools they need to create an individualized care plan that is shared with the referring physician.

"The first step toward living well with diabetes is to learn as much as possible about the disease," said Robert Savino, M.D., Chief of Endocrinology at Danbury Hospital. "Our program gives people with diabetes the knowledge, skills and tools that are essential to successfully manage their diabetes and avoid many of the complications associated with the disease."

Danbury Hospital's DSME program goal is to assist the individual needs of the patient and the referring physician by providing the education and support necessary to:

  • Help patients manage their diabetes
  • Improve self-care skills
  • Encourage a positive outlook
  • Maximize their quality of life

The American Diabetes Association accredited program is beneficial to anyone with Type 1 diabetes mellitus or Type 2 diabetes – newly diagnosed or long-standing. Day and evening group education consists of four interactive classes. Monthly curriculum includes:

  • Personalized goal-setting
  • Preventive care
  • Daily self-care
  • Blood glucose monitoring
  • Low/high blood sugar management
  • Self-awareness of sick days
  • Diet and nutritional counseling
  • Exercise recommendations
  • Medication education
