Orthopedic Anesthesiology

The Director of Orthopedic Anesthesiology, Allan Grunberg, MD, leads a team of anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists who offer state-of-the-art care for orthopedic surgery patients.

Less Postoperative Pain and Fewer Side Effects

We are the only hospital in western Connecticut to offer continuous femoral nerve blocks for TKR, which bathes the nerves that innervate the knee with local anesthetics, leading to less postoperative pain while minimizing the use of narcotic pain medications with their many side effects.

We emphasize regional anesthesia (spinal and peripheral nerve blocks) for total joints, which affords less postoperative pain with less narcotic use, faster rehabilitation and greater patient satisfaction.

For outpatient surgeries, we emphasize regional techniques that allow the avoidance of general anesthesia, which leads to less postoperative pain and faster rehabilitation

New Modalities to Guide Placement

We have incorporated new modalities, such as the use of ultrasounds to guide the placements of the spinal nerve blocks with greater accuracy and safety.

Minimally Invasive Techniques

We work closely with the orthopedic surgeons at Danbury Hospital as they develop new minimally invasive surgical techniques.
