You may wonder if you or your loved one is a candidate for weight loss surgery and it’s a question you should ask. Surgery of this type, as with all surgeries, is something you should discuss with your doctor. Below are a couple factors to keep in mind.
The clinical requirement to qualify for surgery is based on your BMI. You qualify for bariatric surgery if you:
- Have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of over 40, or
- Have a BMI of over 35 and are experiencing severe negative health effects, such as high blood pressure or diabetes, related to being severely overweight
In general, if you are at least 100lbs overweight, you will likely qualify for weight loss surgery.
Making the decision for weight loss surgery is a big decision. We’ve created a program checklist to help you understand and provide you an overview of what it will take to participate in a program. You should consider the risks and complications as well as insurance and the financial matters for this type of surgery.
To be successful you should talk to your family and friends for their support. If you feel bariatric surgery is the right decision for you, talk to your doctor and be aware of the mental and physical preparation required to begin the program.
Moment of Truth
It’s certainly a big decision and we know you may need to evaluate and think about if you are ready for weight loss surgery. What determines if you have reached your moment of truth and are ready to pursue bariatric surgery? Only you and your doctor have the answers.
