Gynecologic Cancer Program

The Gynecological Cancer Program at the Praxair Cancer Center at Danbury Hospital is dedicated to the prevention, detection and treatment of cancers in the female reproductive tract.
At the Praxair Cancer Center, we work with specialists from departments throughout the hospital to coordinate services and identify the best treatment plan for every patient.

Patients in the Gynecological Cancer Program benefit from:

Diagnostic expertise: Our specialists have extensive experience in diagnosing suspected cancer of the female genital tract, including cancers of the cervix, endometrium, ovary, fallopian tube and peritoneal cancers, gestational trophoblastic disease, vagina and vulva.

Personalized treatment: Our team provides comprehensive care using a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach that may involve the expertise of a gynecologic oncology surgeon, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, pathologists, radiologists, a genetic counselor and other healthcare professionals.

Extensive surgical experience: We provide a higher level of care with a multidisciplinary medical team that includes a fellowship-trained surgeon who specializes in gynecologic oncology and cancer research. Our surgeons are experienced in minimally invasive procedures involving small incisions that result in less pain, smaller scars, shorter hospital stays and a quicker return to normal activities.

Advanced technology: Our surgeons have access to the latest advancements, including the use of robotic-assisted technology, a specialized form of minimally invasive surgery. Surgeons use the da Vinci Surgical System that allows surgeons to perform minimally invasive procedures traditionally only performed with open surgery. We also offer high-dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy in radiation oncology for gynecologic cancers to precisely deliver radiation to the tumor while sparing normal tissue.

Clinical research: Our active clinical research program includes multiple clinical trials for gynecological cancers. The Praxair Cancer Center is part of the Gynecological Oncology Group (COG), the only national cooperative study group devoted exclusively to gynecological malignancies.

Biomedical research: The Reproductive Tumor Biology Research Laboratory at the Danbury Hospital Biomedical Research Institute is dedicated to bringing research findings to the bedside as quickly as possible. Researchers hope to identify targeted therapies and biomarkers that will ultimately provide patients with personalized treatment options.

Support Services: Our Cancer Care Coordinator is a specially trained oncology nurses who provides support and education about diagnosis, surgery and treatment to all gynecological cancer patients.
