Your Go Bag

Everyone in your household should have a “Go Bag” ready in case of an emergency. Your Go Bag should be a collection of things you need, and would want, in case you have to leave your home in a hurry. The bag itself should be sturdy and easy to carry, like a backpack, duffle bag, or a small suitcase on wheels. When planning for the individual needs of your household members, be sure to keep your pets in mind and prepare a bag for them as well. Here’s a checklist of items you should consider for your Go Bag:

  • Copies of your important documents in a waterproof container. These would include insurance cards, Medicare/Medicaid cards, photo IDs, proof of address, marriage and birth certificates, copies of credit and ATM cards, etc.
  • If you have any medical devices, like a pacemaker, have the style and serial numbers
  • A list of family physicians and their contact information
  • Flashlight and battery-powered radio with plenty of extra batteries
  • List of medications you take, why you take them, and their dosages
  • Contact information for all your household members and those in your support network
  • Cash, in small bills
  • Extra set of car and house keys
  • Notepad and pen
  • Aerosol tire repair kits and/or tire inflator
  • Supplies for your pets, including food, water, leash, vaccination records, cleaning items, and medications
  • Backup medical equipment (e.g., glasses, batteries for medical devices, etc.)
  • Blankets or sleeping bags
  • A first aid kit and prescription medications
  • A change of clothing, rain gear, and sturdy shoes
  • Special items for infants, older adults, or disabled family members

Use this list as a guide to help you prepare your Go Bag(s) today. Look for information on putting together an emergency supply kit for essential items to keep in your home should you be unable to leave for a few days.
